For years, public libraries have gathered information about local clubs, societies, events and facilities. Today, citizen's
information is about far more than just a printed list of clubs or societies.
With the current emphasis on using I.T. to drive social inclusion initiatives, improving accessibility to community information is a key step towards achieving
local government objectives.
Increasingly, local information providers are working together to minimise duplication and maximise effectiveness. Public
libraries are well placed to take on the role of 'information coordinators' within these partnerships.
So today the challenge for public library community information services is less about collecting information and more about
structuring and integrating the mountain of information available.
